As a part of Art @ Work, the exhibit that open on Friday, January 13, 7-9pm in the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery, we offer three on-site, mural workshops that will transform the Gallery into a working studio. Visitors of all artistic backgrounds, adults and kids (ages 12 and up) are invited to work with Albus Cavus to create a public art piece incorporating their unique voices and perspectives, which will eventually be installed in a local neighborhood as part of Albus Cavus’ Open Walls project.
Along with the community mural, Art @ Work will feature over 50 local, graffiti-style artists who routinely work with Albus Cavus to transform and beautify DC’s neighborhoods, including Ben Tolman, Kelly Towles, Aniekan Udofia, Decoy, Che, and Jazirock.

In partnership with Albus Cavus, a DC non-profit that transforms communities through creativity, the gallery will become an open and interactive forum for artists to visually discuss the effects of unemployment on the lives of DC residents. The current state of unemployment breaks families and communities as individuals fall into despair, depression, and isolation. This collaborative show will engage visitors and artists alike to directly experience the power of art by providing engagement, therapy, training possibilities, and a colorful tool to build a stronger and healthier community.
Through a series of three on-site mural workshops we will transform the gallery space into a working studio. Participating visitors of all ages and artistic backgrounds will be encouraged to become a part of the collective work of art. They will experience the positive impact of art through techniques and materials that are widely used by graffiti and street artists. The completed mural will later be installed on DC’s streets.
Community Mural Workshops: Everyone is an artist in these collaborative mural workshops, which will result in an on-site mural. Exercise you mind and get involved on January 14, 28 and February 4 at 3.30pm. Register online at www.smithcenter.org/gallery. The exhibit will be open from January 13 to February 18, 2012
Opening Reception – Friday, January 13, 7-9pm. Final Mural Unveiling Celebration – Friday, February 17, 7-9pm. Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery is located at 1632 U Street, in Northwest D.C. The gallery is open Wednesday to Friday, 11am-5pm, Saturday, 11am-3pm, and by appointment.

Sponsored and hosted by Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum: To help you discover the beautiful and unexplored world of color around us, artist Peter Krsko of the art and design group Albus Cavus leads a workshop that examines the phenomenon of color. What is it and how do we perceive it? Why is a sunset red and a rainbow always the same? To answer these questions, we will look at color from the perspective of an artist, physicist, neuroscientist, and biologist.
On Sunday, November 20, 2011, 2 – 3:30pm in Anacostia Community Museum, Program Room. Free; for reservations, call 202-633-4844

MONSTER MASH 2 was one of the most intense events we have ever organized. Despite freezing weather and snow, muralists, dancers, skaters and all the art lovers showed up and spent the entire day Garfield Park. It was beautiful! Thank you all for making this happen. Photos
